Scents and Memories
What I love about scents, is that can awaken powerful memories or even create new ones. When you recall the most memorable moments from the past with your loved ones, your childhood, the first date, a trip or special event. Think how often those memories include the memory of a smell that helped you recall that special moment.
Scents have the power to transport you to another time or place.
When I think of my childhood, I instantly recall the scent of freshly baked cheese and dill pies on a Saturday with my mother. The smell of burnt wood in the fireplace, I associate it with the winter of my childhood.
Nowadays, the smell of freesias instantly takes me back to my wedding day, a sunny early Autumn day that took place on September 2nd 2018. Freesias were the main flowers in my wedding bouquet. My only regret is not choosing my wedding perfume with a freesia note. These days, I always tend to buy candles for our home with a freesia scent. Also, my everyday perfume has a freesia note - the English Pear and Freesia by Jo Malone.
Why fragrances are so popular as gifts?
Giving perfume as a gift can symbolize thoughtfulness, intimacy, and appreciation for the recipient. It also shows that you have taken the time to select a fragrance that you believe the recipient will enjoy and can be a personal and luxurious gift. Moreover, choosing custom engraving on the perfume will add a wow reaction when the recipient is opening the gift.
Why Calligraphy Engraving Personalisation?
As a calligrapher, I love adding extra personalisation touches when I make a gift to a loved one. A handwritten card, a unique gift tag with beautiful calligraphy and since I started engraving in 2020, I’ve always added calligraphy engraving personalisation on gifts like perfumes, wine bottles or candles. And I absolutely adore elevating a regular gift for my clients into a special unique and personalised one with calligraphy engraving.
Of course, there are lots of brands who offer engraving on perfumes, but those options are limited to standard fonts. Also, those machines can’t add the unique human factor and twist to them.
Moreover, calligraphy engraving is so versatile. The artist can engrave different sides of the bottle and even add illustration. The choices are endless.
Since I started offering this service, I engraved lots of perfumes for different occasions.
In this blog post, I wanted to share a few ideas when you can gift a personalised engraved fragrance.
WEDDING DAY
I will start with the most important occasion in someone’s life - the wedding. If you are a bride-to-be or a groom-to-be, I strongly recommend choosing a signature perfume to wear on your wedding day. To make these even more special, have them engraved by a local calligrapher and engraver in your area with your name on them and wedding date. It will be a special moment to exchange your perfumes on your wedding day. Once you finish the perfume from the bottles, keep them in your wedding memory box, these will become your family wedding heirlooms. Whenever you open that box and hold your wedding perfume bottle, the smell will still be there and will take you on a trip down memory lane of your wedding day.
Or you can choose a new scent for your wedding day and save it for special occasions to wear or when you need a happy boost: a single spray can bring all those feelings of joy and love on even the dreariest of days.
The most popular personalisation requests are:
Bride & Groom names + wedding date (photo 1 below)
Titles ‘Bride/Groom + wedding date (photo 4)
Bride name + wedding day (this was a gift from the groom to his bride - photo 2)
Mrs + new surname (this was also a gift from the groom to his bride on their wedding day - photo 3)
2. MOTHER OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM GIFTS
Also, related to weddings, it is popular to gift an engraved fragrance bottle to the Mother of the Bride and Groom. Usually, the brides order these perfumes as gifts for both of them. The Mothers will keep those perfume bottles as a heirloom memory of their children’s wedding day.
Most popular personalisation requests are the usual:
‘Mother of the Bride/Groom + wedding day’
If you want to make these more personal, you can choose ‘Mother’s name + wedding date’ (like in the 4th photo below), or the date can also go on the back or on the edge.
3. ULTIMATE BRIDESMAID GIFT
Also, wedding related, custom engraved perfume is the perfect gift for the Bridesmaids and Maid of Honour. Rest assured they will cherish these cute mini engraved perfume bottles for a lifetime as a reminder from your big day.
I believe mini perfumes like the 15ml bottles below by Jo Malone (or the 30 ml ones) make the perfect choice when you prepare the little packages to ask the big question to your besties: ‘Be my bridesmaid’.
Also, because these are so tiny, they will fit perfectly in everyone’s clutches at the wedding.

4. BIRTHDAY MILESTONES
Have a special milestone birthday coming up in your family? If you are stuck on gifting ideas for their 20th, 30th or 40th birthdays or more, choosing to gift their favourite scent bottle and have it engraved with a special message, or simply with their names and date of the birthday.
5. MOTHERS DAY AND FATHERS DAY GIFTS
Sometimes, choosing a gift for Mother’s and Father’s days can become a challenge. It might not be the ideal choice, but is an idea to gift either their favourite perfume scent or choose to surprise them with a new scent. Having them engraved with personalised messages will make these even more special. For sure, they will treasure these bottles forever.
6. CHRISTMAS GIFTS
Ultimately, gifting perfumes for Christmas is another popular occasion as well. Perfumes are great options for all our loved ones: mums, dads, siblings, partners etc.
In fact, Christmas is a wonderful time to gift an engraved perfume to mark a special occasion from that year. Think of newly engaged couples or newly married couples.
Other occasions to consider gifting an engraved perfume include Valentine’s Day, the honeymoon (choose a new scent that will take you back to that location whenever you’ll wear it), for new mums or any special anniversaries etc.
In honesty, there are so many occasions you can think of gifting a perfume and make good gifts at any age.
Sourcing a hand engraving artist to engrave these perfumes will turn it into a more special one.
Some advice
When it comes to choosing the engraving artist to do some custom engraving, it is always best to go for someone from the same country you live in. Perfumes are expensive products and when sending these internationally, there will be some additional custom charges that customer needs to pay.
I live in the UK and had many requests from possible clients from the US and Australia in the past. As much as I wanted to fulfill those requests, I’m always honest with everyone and recommend to search for an engraving artist in their area.
